Saint Dominic de Guzmán (1170–1221) was a Spanish priest and the founder of the Order of Preachers, commonly known as the Dominicans. He devoted his life to preaching the Gospel, teaching the faith, a man of prayer, and bringing people closer to Jesus Christ. In 1216, Pope Honorius III formally approved the Dominican Order, and Dominic continued to serve as its leader until his death in 1221. His deep love for the Blessed Virgin Mary became an important part of Dominican spirituality.
According to Dominican tradition, while Dominic was praying and preaching in southern France, the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to him and encouraged him to spread the Rosary as a powerful prayer for conversion. The story tells that Dominic then preached the Rosary and helped make it an important part of the Church’s devotional life. Although the Rosary developed gradually over many centuries, the Dominican Order has played an important role in promoting it. Today, the Rosary remains a beloved prayer that leads Christians, through Mary, to meditate on the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus.
